Psychology/Psychiatry in Ayurveda

06:05

This lecture discusses the importance of psychology and psychiatry within Ayurveda while referring to the sequence of its branches. The speaker explains that general medicine (Chikitsa) is considered the foremost branch because physical pain and discomfort require immediate attention. The lecture then emphasizes the significance of the mind, describing it as one of the most important aspects of life after physical health. A branch associated with mental health is introduced and described as one of the more controversial areas of Ayurveda due to the interpretation of certain Sanskrit terminology. Although the lecture briefly touches upon this controversy, its primary focus is on highlighting the importance of mental well-being alongside physical health within the Ayurvedic framework. The discussion reinforces that Ayurveda addresses both body and mind as essential components of overall health.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role of mental health in Ayurveda.
  • Identify Chikitsa as the first branch of Ayurveda.
  • Understand why physical and mental health are both emphasized.
  • Recognize that psychology and psychiatry have a place within Ayurvedic practice.

The Origin of Ayurveda

01:19

Explore the origin of ayurveda and its role in ayurvedic psychology, linking ancient principles to the 16 personality archetypes.

Classical Aim of Ayurveda

16:49

This lecture explains the classical aim of Ayurveda as described in ancient Ayurvedic texts. The speaker interprets the principle as having two objectives: preserving the health of healthy individuals and curing those who are sick. A key emphasis is placed on the order of these objectives, with health preservation taking priority over treatment. According to the lecture, this sequence reflects the preventive approach of Ayurveda, suggesting that an effective healthcare system should focus first on maintaining health before treating disease. The speaker further relates this principle to modern healthcare by highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare centres alongside treatment facilities. Throughout the lecture, prevention is presented as the foundation of Ayurvedic healthcare, while treatment serves as the second objective after maintaining wellness.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the classical aim of Ayurveda.
  • Distinguish between prevention and treatment in Ayurveda.
  • Explain why preserving health is prioritized over curing disease.
  • Recognize the importance of preventive healthcare in Ayurvedic philosophy.

Classical Definition of Ayurveda

23:10

This lecture presents the classical definition of Ayurveda from the Charaka Samhita and explains its meaning by interpreting the Sanskrit verse. The speaker discusses the concepts of beneficial and non-beneficial as well as comfortable and uncomfortable aspects of life. According to the explanation, Ayurveda is described as the science or wisdom that provides knowledge about living a beneficial life, avoiding harmful practices, understanding comfort and discomfort, and making the best use of life. The lecture emphasizes that Ayurveda is concerned not only with health but also with guiding individuals toward choices that influence the quality and duration of life. By breaking down each part of the verse, the speaker explains how the classical definition reflects the comprehensive nature of Ayurveda and introduces its broader philosophical outlook on living well.

Learning Outcomes

  • State the classical definition of Ayurveda.
  • Explain the meanings of beneficial and non-beneficial life.
  • Describe the concepts of comfortable and uncomfortable life.
  • Understand Ayurveda as a science that guides healthy and meaningful living.

Scientific Evidence in Ayurveda

00:55

Examine the scientific evidence behind ayurvedic psychology and the 16 personality archetypes, linking ancient wisdom with modern research.

Ashtang Ayurveda - The Eight Limbs of Ayurveda

03:22

This lecture introduces Ashtanga Ayurveda, the eight branches of Ayurveda, and explains their significance within the Ayurvedic healthcare system. The speaker emphasizes that Ayurveda is a structured and organized medical system rather than knowledge developed through trial and error. Each branch is presented as addressing different healthcare needs, and the sequence of these branches is described as meaningful. The lecture begins with Chikitsa (general medicine) and explains that the complete significance of each specialization will be explored later. By outlining the existence of distinct branches, the lecture highlights the comprehensive scope of Ayurveda and its organized approach to healthcare. The discussion focuses on demonstrating that Ayurveda includes multiple specialized fields designed to meet various health-related requirements of living beings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define Ashtanga Ayurveda.
  • Explain the purpose of the eight branches of Ayurveda.
  • Recognize Ayurveda as a structured healthcare system.
  • Identify Chikitsa (general medicine) as the first branch introduced.

What is Ayurveda?

02:54

This lecture explains the meaning of the word Ayurveda by breaking it into the terms Ayu and Veda. The speaker describes Ayu as the duration of life that exists only when four essential components are present together: body, senses, mind, and soul. According to the lecture, if any one of these components is absent, life cannot exist. Based on this explanation, Ayurveda is presented as a system that applies not only to human beings but to every living being possessing these four factors. The discussion emphasizes that Ayurveda studies life in a holistic manner by considering physical, mental, sensory, and spiritual dimensions together rather than focusing on a single aspect. The lecture introduces this foundational understanding as the basis for further learning about Ayurveda and its principles, highlighting the broad scope of the discipline through the meanings of its two Sanskrit terms.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the meaning of the terms Ayu and Veda.
  • Identify the four components of life: body, senses, mind, and soul.
  • Explain why Ayurveda considers life from a holistic perspective.
  • Recognize that Ayurveda applies to all living beings possessing these four factors.

Dravya - Unit of Independent Existence

01:05

This lecture explains the concept of Dravya as something capable of independent existence. The speaker distinguishes Dravya from other Padarthas (categories) by using the example of heat, which cannot exist on its own and requires matter to express itself. In contrast, matter possesses an independent existence and serves as the foundation upon which qualities and other characteristics depend. The lecture emphasizes that while other Padarthas may describe properties or attributes, Dravya is unique because it exists independently. Through this comparison, the speaker clarifies why Dravya occupies a central position in Ayurvedic philosophy. The discussion introduces independent existence as a defining feature of matter and provides a conceptual basis for differentiating substances from their associated qualities or actions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define Dravya as an entity with independent existence.
  • Differentiate Dravya from other Padarthas.
  • Explain why heat is not considered independently existing.
  • Understand the role of matter as the basis for other properties.

The Nine Elements - Introduction

01:00

This lecture introduces the concept of the nine fundamental elements in Ayurveda. The speaker explains that while many learners are familiar with the Pancha Mahabhuta (five great elements), these five are actually part of a broader group of nine elements. The discussion highlights that understanding the nine elements provides a more complete foundation for studying Ayurvedic philosophy. Rather than focusing immediately on the five great elements, the lecture introduces the larger framework from which they originate. The speaker emphasizes that these nine elements are significant and form an important basis for later concepts in Ayurveda. The lecture serves as an introductory overview, preparing learners for a more detailed study of the elements and their role in understanding the nature of existence according to Ayurvedic principles.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the existence of the nine fundamental elements.
  • Explain the relationship between the nine elements and the Pancha Mahabhuta.
  • Recognize that the five great elements are part of a broader framework.
  • Understand the introductory role of the nine elements in Ayurveda.

Dravya - The Unit of Creation

01:20

This lecture explains an important characteristic of Dravya (matter) by emphasizing that it has the ability to produce other forms of matter. The speaker contrasts matter with qualities such as heat and dryness, explaining that while these qualities may combine, increase, or decrease, they remain properties rather than independent matter. Through simple examples, the lecture illustrates that one form of matter can give rise to another, making Dravya the fundamental unit involved in creation and transformation. The discussion focuses on the productive nature of matter and highlights that qualities alone cannot create new matter independently. By distinguishing between matter and its properties, the lecture reinforces the Ayurvedic understanding of Dravya as the basis for physical existence and change. This concept serves as a foundation for understanding how material substances interact and transform within Ayurvedic philosophy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain why Dravya is considered the unit of creation.
  • Distinguish between matter and its qualities.
  • Understand that matter can produce other forms of matter.
  • Recognize the difference between Dravya and properties such as heat and dryness.

Triguna- The Stages of Evolution

01:44

This lecture discusses the stages of evolution in relation to Triguna and the development of consciousness. The speaker explains the belief that life progresses through different forms, such as plants and animals, before reaching the human stage. Human birth is presented as a stage associated with a higher level of consciousness and compared to entering college after completing earlier levels of education. This educational analogy is used to explain that evolution represents a gradual process of learning and development rather than an instantaneous change. The lecture focuses on the growth of consciousness as the defining feature of this progression and introduces the idea that human life provides opportunities for continued learning and advancement. The discussion remains centered on understanding evolution from the perspective presented in the lecture.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the stages of evolution discussed in the lecture.
  • Describe the relationship between evolution and consciousness.
  • Understand the educational analogy used to explain human birth.
  • Recognize the importance of continued growth and learning.

Triguna - The Game of Life

14:38

This lecture explains the concept of Triguna by comparing life to a soccer game. The speaker uses this analogy to describe different personality types, particularly focusing on the Sattvic perspective. According to the lecture, a Sattvic individual recognizes life as a meaningful game and views every experience as an opportunity for learning and growth. The analogy illustrates how awareness and consciousness influence the way people participate in life, just as players approach a match with different attitudes. Through this comparison, the lecture presents Triguna as a framework for understanding behaviour and personality rather than simply categorizing individuals. The discussion emphasizes consciousness, learning, and perspective as central themes, helping learners understand how the three Gunas influence human experience and decision-making.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the concept of Triguna using the game-of-life analogy.
  • Describe the characteristics of the Sattvic personality.
  • Understand the relationship between consciousness and behaviour.
  • Recognize how Triguna helps explain different perspectives in life.

What is Dravya?

The Rajasic & Tamasic Personality Types

10:04

This lecture introduces the Sattvic personality type and explains its place among the 16 personality types described in Ayurveda. The speaker refers to the Charaka Samhita, specifically a section that discusses the mental and physical nature of human beings. The lecture explains that Sattva represents purity and is free from dominant impurities such as greed, anger, hatred, attachment, and excessive desire. Although a Sattvic person may temporarily experience these emotions, they are able to recognize them, reflect on their actions, and avoid remaining under their influence. The speaker compares thoughts to clouds passing through the mind, explaining that Sattvic individuals allow negative thoughts to pass without acting upon them. This ability is attributed to greater intellect, awareness, and self-control. The lecture emphasizes that the defining quality of the Sattvic personality is not the absence of negative thoughts but the ability to regulate them and choose appropriate actions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the characteristics of the Sattvic personality.
  • Explain why Sattva is associated with purity.
  • Describe how Sattvic individuals manage negative thoughts and emotions.
  • Recognize the role of intellect, awareness, and self-control in Sattvic behaviour.

The Sattvic Personality Types

05:38

This lecture explains the characteristics of the Rajasic and Tamasic personality types in Ayurveda. The speaker describes Rajas as being dominated by desire, which often leads to anger when expectations are not fulfilled. Anger and hyperactivity are presented as closely connected, with each reinforcing the other. In contrast, Tamas is associated with attachment, ignorance, and a lack of awareness of one’s surroundings. The lecture uses simple examples to illustrate how excessive focus on a single object or on one’s own ego can result in ignoring everything else. The speaker further explains that Rajas and Tamas are interconnected, as uncontrolled desires combined with ignorance contribute to ego-centred behaviour. Individuals with these dominant qualities are described as being primarily concerned with themselves rather than recognizing their connection with others. The lecture concludes by identifying Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas as the three fundamental mind types described in Ayurveda.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the characteristics of Rajasic and Tamasic personalities.
  • Explain how desire, anger, and hyperactivity are related in Rajas.
  • Understand the role of attachment and ignorance in Tamas.
  • Recognize Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas as the three Ayurvedic mind types.

This course explores a lesser-known area of Ayurveda: the 16 psychological archetypes of the human mind described in classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Kashyapa Samhita.

Unlike common Ayurvedic teachings focused on doshas, Prakriti, or physical constitution, this course examines the deeper patterns that influence how people think, feel, communicate, make decisions, build relationships, and respond to the world.

You will begin with the foundations of Ayurvedic psychology and the three mental qualities known as Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. These qualities provide the basis for understanding the 16 archetypes and their different motivations, strengths, challenges, and behavioural tendencies.

The course introduces seven Sattvic archetypes associated with clarity, wisdom, creativity, responsibility, and higher awareness:

*Brahma: visionary, constructive, and nurturing
*Rishi: contemplative, intuitive, and truth-oriented
*Indra: authoritative, influential, and leadership-driven
*Yamya: disciplined, principled, and focused on order
*Varun: adaptable, observant, and emotionally deep
*Kuber: resourceful, security-focused, and skilled in managing wealth
*Gandharva: artistic, expressive, imaginative, and drawn to beauty

You will then examine six Rajasic archetypes shaped by ambition, movement, desire, intensity, and strong emotional drives:

*Asur: ambitious, rebellious, and power-oriented
*Rakshas: forceful, protective, and confrontational
*Paisach: restless, dissatisfied, and driven by continual craving
*Preta: attached, obsessive, and resistant to letting go
*Sarp: strategic, secretive, alert, and highly calculating
*Shakun: pattern-focused, unpredictable, and attentive to signs

The course also explores three Tamasic archetypes connected with instinct, passivity, stagnation, and limited self-reflection:

*Pashav: instinct-driven and focused on immediate needs
*Matsya: unstable, easily influenced, and lacking clear direction
*Vanaspatya: passive, resistant to change, and slow to develop

Each archetype is explained through accessible stories, behavioural examples, cultural references, and recognizable public personalities. These examples help translate traditional Sanskrit concepts into patterns that can be observed in modern relationships, workplaces, leadership roles, creative fields, and everyday life.

You will explore how the archetypes may influence:

*Personal strengths and limitations
*Emotional and behavioural patterns
*Communication and relationships
*Leadership and decision-making
*Career preferences and working styles
*Creativity, ambition, attachment, and motivation
*Conflict, cooperation, and personal development

The course also explains that people do not always belong to one fixed category. A person may display a dominant archetype together with qualities from several other types. These combinations create a wide range of individual personality patterns.

By understanding these differences, you can develop greater self-awareness, communicate more effectively, reduce unrealistic expectations, and approach other people with more clarity and compassion.

This framework may be especially useful for learners involved in coaching, counseling, education, leadership, human resources, conflict resolution, and personal development. It can also help individuals reflect on their own mental tendencies and understand why certain environments, relationships, or responsibilities feel more natural than others.

By the end of the course, you will be able to recognize the core characteristics of all 16 Ayurvedic personality archetypes and use this traditional framework as a practical lens for understanding yourself, other people, and the diversity of human behaviour.

Disclaimer: This course presents a traditional educational framework. It does not replace professional psychological assessment, diagnosis, counseling, or medical treatment.

Namaste,

I’m Vaidya Kanika Kamalkant, an Ayurveda practitioner with over 15 years of experience.

My journey into Ayurveda began through my own health challenges. As a child, allergies to commonly prescribed medicines led me to explore natural approaches to healing. Over time, this personal search became a lifelong calling.

Heartfulness meditation played a transformative role in my life and deepened my understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and well-being. Guided by my meditation teacher, I was introduced to Ayurveda and began combining inner awareness with traditional healing principles.

I started my professional journey as a general physician, supporting people with common health concerns. As my experience grew, my focus shifted toward mental and emotional well-being. This led me to study modern psychotherapy, mindfulness, meditation, and their influence on overall health.

Today, my main area of expertise is Ayurvedic psychology, particularly Satvavajaya Chikitsa Ayurveda’s approach to strengthening the mind and supporting emotional balance. My work explores Ayurvedic personality types, mental well-being, soul-based perspectives, and the connection between individual constitution, lifestyle, and personal growth.

I am also developing the Varna Career Alignment Framework, a research-based approach inspired by the Vedic concepts of Guna and Karma. It explores how a person’s natural qualities and way of contributing may support career alignment, relationships, leadership, education, and self-understanding.

My long-term vision is to create a scientifically informed assessment system that connects classical Indian wisdom with modern psychology, career counselling, and personal development.

Through my courses and research, I aim to make Ayurvedic and Vedic knowledge practical, accessible, and relevant to modern life.

Jivem Śaradaḥ Śatam may we live strong, conscious, and fulfilled for a hundred years.
